UPDATED: Countess of Wessex compliments The Queen in white at Diamond Jubilee Trust reception

Yesterday evening, at a reception to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Trust, The Countess of Wessex was a perfect complement to The Queen, by wearing a white ensemble and allowing Her Majesty to stand out in cobalt blue. More on the event, including the speech where Sophie calls her mother-in-law ‘mama’ here.

Sophie opted for a dress by Valentino, the ‘Pleated wool and silk-blend grain de poudre midi dress’, which costs £2790 here. The cream piece features t-shirt sleeves and a round neckline, moving from the relaxed bodice into a pleated midi skirt, scalloped at the hem. The pleats in the skirt are stitched at the top, before allowing the skirt to flare further dow; the skirt actually resembles petals, and has quite a stiff structure. A concealed zip to the back closes the dress. The hem definitely makes this a more interesting piece, and the wool-silk blend fabric adds a touch of glam.

The Countess wore her Penelope Chilvers ‘Tango’ Mary Jane heels, in the tan/violet colour-way. With a square toe and 3-inch block tapered heel, these shoes feature a tan body and violet purple buckle and heel. Perhaps not the most obvious choice for this outfit. These and her grey pair are no longer available, but the label has a them in ruby red velvet here.

Sophie wore her Lucia Odescalchi lozenge earrings, in a deep amber. These are a great match – try here.

She also chose a new necklace. The tarnished metal piece features a diamond-shaped base, slightly shorter at the bottom. There is intricate work, with what look like leaves and embellished berries flanking the central amber-coloured stone. This looks like costume jewellery to us, but we are yet to find it. Updates when we have them.

UPDATE: this necklace was gifted to the Countess on her visit to Kosovo earlier this year. We are looking for more details of the piece and its maker.

While the dress is lovely and simple, and the unusual tones in the jewellery add some pizazz to this look, we think the shoes were a big miss for Sophie. We don’t think we have seen an outfit with them that we have liked… What did you think to this look?
