The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the Royal Variety Performance last night, making it their third time in the royal box. Kate chose a new evening gown that has split opinions, in lace. More on the event here.

Catherine’s dress was from Alexander McQueen. The custom piece features a sweetheart neckline which moves into a fitted bodice and skirt, that begins to flare from the knee and is scalloped, following the shape of the lace, at the hem. The sheer lace sleeves are topped with puff shoulders and scalloped at the cuff, while the back of the dress is cut low, approximately to the waist. The neckline and waist are trimmed in velvet, and the lace is lined with a nude fabric. Now to the fabric, the lace features a floral and scroll pattern, which are linked with radiating lines and dots.

You can see some similarities in these McQueen dresses – the lace, the nude and black colouring, puff shoulders, trumpet skirt – two of which are no longer available. View here. These range in price, up past the £5000 mark.

We saw Kate carry her Jimmy Choo ‘Celeste’ clutch, in velvet. The Duchess owns this bag in numerous colours and fabrics. We show the crushed velvet version below, but Kate’s is a standard velvet, with less lustre. Get an updated version of the bag here or here for £895. This is a nice match for anyone with a high-street budget.

The Duchess paired the dress with her Jimmy Choo ‘Romy’ 100 heels in black velvet. With a 4-inch heel and pointed toe, they are a wonderful piece for evening wear. Kate’s version are now sold out, but you can still shop this style in various colours and textures here and here, ranging from £475-£675.

She chose her Erdem floral earrings, that we first saw last year. These costume earrings feature a rounded-square yellow crystal stud, surrounded in a halo style by black stones. From the stud comes a crystal hoop, to which is an abstract crystal and pearl flower. Finally, an elongated pearl hangs from this.

We weren’t huge fans of this dress; the neckline, puffed shoulders and nude slip didn’t work for us. Additionally, it is vaguely similar to her other lace McQueen gown. What did you think?
