Duchess of Cambridge joins The Queen in custom Catherine Walker

The Duchess of Cambridge today joined The Queen for a much-anticipated joint engagement at King’s College London to open Bush House. The Duchess looked regally elegant in a new Catherine Walker dress coat. Kate also attended the Founding Museum in the afternoon removing her hat.

Kate chose a coat dress from one of her favourite go to designers Catherine Walker. Whilst at first glance, the light charcoal tweed coat dress looked awfully similar to one she has previously worn, this was an entirely new piece. As with many of Kate’s Catherine Walker pieces it is completely bespoke, though draws on construction elements from other current Catherine Walker pieces.

The impeccably tailored piece takes inspiration from 1950’s tailoring. The Duchess’ coat dress has a contrasting black velvet pointed down collar, long sleeves ending in five black button cuffs, a fitted bodice which is cinched in at the waist with a wide matching belt with black buckle. The skirt of the coat dress is the most beautiful part, with amazingly constructed wide box pleats that flare gracefully into a very feminine, full knee length skirt.

Below we show three Catherine Walker coats that share similarities with Kate’s coat from today. The first is the ‘Zeline’ coat which shares mainly a similar shape and silhouette of Kate’s coat, especially the vintage style box pleated skirt. The second is the ‘Blake’ coat which shows a similar type of fabric and silhouette to Kate’s. The third is the ‘Scarlet’ coat which has a black velvet contrast collar similar to the custom piece, though we feel Kate’s velvet collar is a little bit sharper and pointed.

There is certainly a degree of similarity between this piece and the custom Catherine Walker coat seen in January at Leicester City Football Club.

Catherine wore her Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co. ‘Fairytale’ hat. We have seen Kate wear this hat on numerous occasions in the past including her first joint engagement with The Queen back in 2012 in Leicester, when she was wearing a teal L.K. Bennett peplum skirt suit, Alexander McQueen belt, L.K. Bennett black suede pumps and Kiki McDonough earrings. We have never really been fans of this black felt slightly oversize blocked beret with flower and pointed leaf trim. For some reason though today it really seemed to work with her outfit and we really liked this hat paired with the new coat.

Kate carried her Mulberry ‘Bayswater’ clutch in black suede. The front flap clutch has a silver logo engraved plaque with turn-lock closure and optional shoulder strap. This is also one of Kate’s favourite pieces to use. It is a past season so no longer available to purchase.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore her new Gianvito Rossi ‘Piper’ 85 black suede block heel pumps, retailing for £495. Whilst these heels are very similar to her pointed toe black suede block heel Tod’s pumps, these are a much-needed update, with the heel covered in suede and not in a rubber. You can purchase these pumps here, here and here.

The Queen looked beautiful in her rose pink Stewart Parvin coat with contrasting black buttons, Rachel Trevor Morgan matching rose pink drop brim hat with domed crown, trimmed with pink and black contrasting band, mauve and olive roses, a bespoke Launer London black patent leather handbag and sparkling pink sapphire and diamond halo brooch. The Queen’s collection of brooches is truly amazing.

We adored Catherine’s impeccable style today, a true future queen in the making.
