Duchess of Cambridge tweaks old floral McQueen gown for NPG Portrait Gala

The Duchess of Cambridge this evening attended the 2019 Portrait Gala at the National Portrait Gallery, to raise funds for the outreach programmes of the organisation. Kate was joined by Princess Beatrice and celebs like David and Victoria Beckham, and Kate Moss.

She wore a McQueen gown that we first saw in 2017 at the BAFTAs, but it has been reworked a little. Cap sleeves were added to the dress, which was a bespoke version of the ‘Long Tier Violet Jacquard Dress’ from the designer’s 2016 Resort Collection.

The fitted bodice has a square neckline (now with the capped sleeves) and there is a cinched-in waist with a satin belt. This then moves to a dropped waistline before flaring into a tiered ruffle skirt, with each tier separated by a band of satin. The fabric, in an almost-crinkled texture, is adorned with white flowers and some lilac ones too, which are larger in the skirt.

The original features a bustier-style bodice that is semi-transparent, and the skirt has a larger organza overlay. Catherine’s appears to have been stitched to allow for a slimmer silhouette.

We certainly prefer this style of the dress!

For shoes, the Duchess appears to have worn her Jimmy Choo ‘Cosmic’ platform heels, that we haven’t seen for a while now. They were once Kate’s go-to evening shoe, last seen in 2015. Featuring a 4.7-inch heel with a 1.2-inch platform, the shoe has an almond-shaped toe. The heels originally sold for £450.

Jimmy Choo have a very similar style heel now, the ‘Ellis’, which are £495. Get a pair here.

Kate chose her Kiki McDonough earrings that she first wore at her sister’s wedding in 2017. These are the ‘Double pink morganite and diamond drops’. The stud is a square stone set at an angle, surrounded by small diamonds; a larger diamond separates the stud from the large oval pink stone, also surrounded by diamonds.

These are a great option to replikate the look.

Catherine carried her Prada black satin clutch. The hard-shell piece is in a rectangular shape and features a large clear stone clasp with gold hardware. This piece was first spotted on the Cambridge’s tour of India. A similar Prada piece, minus the ornate clasp, is available here for £1170.
