Today is The Countess of Wessex’s 55th birthday! We thought we would take a look at Sophie’s top hats worn over the years to mark the day… let us know which your favourites were!
This gorgeous ice blue hat from Jane Taylor was worn to the wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May 2018. With a pear-shaped base, the matching feathers curve around the top of the hat towards the face. Stunning.

We simply love the country casual look this Hicks and Brown ‘Suffolk’ fedora brings. Sophie has owned this for a couple of years now, and it’s still available here for £95.

This Jane Taylor rice hat was first debuted during Royal Ascot last year. We thought it was such a fun stand out piece, and worked so well, teamed with the simple dress. The texture – a mix of boucle and plastic – adds more interest, too.

What more can we say about this statement piece? A large cream saucer, with buntal and net twists, there isn’t a lot *not* to love, especially paired with pearls! Like most of Sophie’s hats, it was created by Jane Taylor, her go-to milliner.

This elegant hat has been seen a few times since its debut in 2009. A simple upturned saucer, the piece is covered with folds of fabric, which give an interesting texture to the base – it’s almost petal-like. This was created by Rachel Trevor Morgan, The Queen’s hat maker.

It’s always good to see a Royal get value for money and wear out of their expensive clothing! Sophie has worn this straw open lattice hat a few times, with black bow, but she recently had it swapped out for a coral version, allowing her to pair it with more looks. Which do you prefer?

This is a lovely pale blue cocktail hat that we have seen on a number of occasions, paired with a distinct Emilia Wickstead skirt and jacket. A beaded hat makes this a very feminine piece, draped with sculpted silk bows, that just stands out amongst Sophie’s other Jane Taylor chapeaus.

Teal is a fantastic colour on the Countess, and we loved teal look at Royal Ascot back in 2013. It comes from Jane Taylor, and features a round, stepped base, with lace leaves and fronds.

Another from Jane Taylor, this oversized black hat is such a versatile piece, it brought an all-black outfit to life at Ascot in 2014. The Countess has worn it on many occasions and it is just an effortless accessory.
A striking look was created by pairing this peacock feather hat with a cobalt blue outfit in 2012, although it has been worn in other more subtle ways too. We would love to see Sophie have it reworked into something a touch less in-your-face (can’t be helpful to sit behind her in church…!).

We had to include this hat, also from Jane Taylor. In a boater style, but with a shallower crown, the underside was created to match the fabric of the Countess’ dress! An unusual and hugely trendy hat, even if lots of us didn’t like the print…
